Last Warm-Weather Run: Training Tips for Fall Transition

Good morning!

My Thursday started the same way it has most Thursdays this semester — with a run alongside my friend Elle.

I’m grateful for running partners — I wouldn’t have gotten out of bed on my own this morning, but once we were out there we had a great run. Combining conversation with exercise really helps motivate me.

It was warm and damp — shorts and a T-shirt were all I needed. The forecast had promised heavy rain, so we were pleasantly surprised that it stayed only wet, not pouring.

I also wore a compression sleeve today — just one, because why not be a little hipster about it.

Apparently colder weather is returning tonight. We’ve had an unusually warm stretch — one day even reached near 80 — but temperatures are expected to drop back to around 28 degrees. Fall is making a dramatic comeback, though the colorful leaves help soften the shock.

Run Splits:

  • Mile 1: 9:36
  • Mile 2: 9:49
  • Mile 3: 9:16
  • Mile 4: 8:52
  • 0.35 nubbin pace: 8:46

Total time: 40:37. Total distance: 4.35 miles. Average pace: 9:20. It wasn’t our fastest run — the route was super hilly and our legs were still sore after last night’s class at Franklin Street Yoga, which was incredibly challenging. We were literally dripping sweat. I love that studio — it was the “Rock Your Asana” class, complete with upbeat music and even a moment when the instructor had everyone dance. It felt fun and unpretentious.

I’m planning one more long run this weekend (maybe 11 miles), provided my ankle and calf feel okay. That will likely be my final long run before the Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in about two weeks. Training hasn’t been perfect — I skipped two long runs to avoid aggravating my ankle and calf — but I’ve been consistent with twice-weekly runs during the week (one speed workout and one 4–5 mile run). I’m not aiming for a personal record; mostly I want to enjoy the race.

I’m off to class now — the rain has started, but I’m glad it held off until after our run. Have a great day, and stay tuned: tomorrow I’ll share my 10 favorite Thanksgiving recipes.
