This red, white, and blue Space Pop cocktail captures the festive look of a patriotic drink while delivering bright flavors of lime, orange, and cherry—ideal for lazy summer afternoons and holiday gatherings.

I still indulge my inner child when it comes to cocktail creativity. One of my favorite childhood lollipops—those layered, star-spangled treats—inspired this Space Pop Cocktail.
With its red, white, and blue presentation, it’s a natural choice for summer holidays like Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Originally introduced in the 1960s during the “Space Race,” the classic lollipop features three distinct layers in a pointed cone and was poured directly into the wrapper, a stick added, then sealed with edible wax. The marketed flavors are cherry, passionfruit, and pineapple, though the colors often make them taste like cherry, lemon, and orange to many of us.
Those perceived flavors—orange, lemon, and cherry—are the palette I used to translate the candy into a cocktail: blue orange liqueur for the “orange” layer, limeade and vodka for the white layer, and cherry for the red.

To get a crisp red, white, and blue effect I use blue-colored orange liqueur (Blue Curacao) for the bottom layer. The white layer is a mix of prepared limeade, vodka, and soda. For the cherry-red element I create small grenadine ice cubes so the drink stays cool without diluting the color or flavor.
Making cherry-flavored ice cubes from grenadine and lemon-lime soda gives you bright red cubes that slowly melt, releasing grenadine into the drink and adding a fun visual effect.
I use small silicone molds to freeze the grenadine mixture—these are handy in the kitchen for more than just ice cubes, and they help you portion other recipes consistently.

How to Make Flavored Ice Cubes
Mix equal parts grenadine and lemon-lime soda (1:1). You can substitute club soda or the same limeade used in the cocktail if you prefer a less sweet cube.
Do not add vodka to the ice cube mixture—alcohol prevents the cubes from freezing solid. Stir the two components together in a container with a pour spout, fill your molds, and freeze for at least four hours. Make as many as you’ll need and save extras for non-alcoholic drinks for kids or guests.
Ingredients Needed
For the cocktail gather Blue Curacao (a blue orange liqueur), vodka, prepared limeade (bottled or reconstituted from concentrate), lemon-lime soda or club soda, ice, and Maraschino cherries with stems for garnish.
I keep limeade on hand all summer—it’s a simple way to add bright citrus to cocktails. Buy Maraschino cherries with stems so guests can easily grab and enjoy them without fuss; they’re great for tying into playful knots if you’re feeling whimsical.

A lighthearted note about Maraschino cherries: once I overheard someone call them “marching cherries,” and the name stuck in my household. So yes—please get the stems.

How to Make a Layered Cocktail
1. Pour about 2 tablespoons of Blue Curacao into the bottom of a glass. A stemless wine glass works well for everyday cocktails and displays the layers nicely.
2. Add ice to the glass—regular ice plus a couple of grenadine cubes works nicely. The Blue Curacao is strong, so the ice helps temper it.
3. In a container with a pour spout, mix prepared limeade, vodka, and lemon-lime soda (or club soda) and stir to combine.
4. Slowly pour the limeade mixture over the ice, pouring close to the ice surface so the liquid drizzles down instead of splashing the Blue Curacao. Pouring slowly preserves a layered gradient effect.
SLOWLY…

5. Top with either Maraschino cherries (the “marching” cherries) or one or two grenadine ice cubes. If you use grenadine cubes, they melt slowly and the grenadine pulls into the blue layer, producing a subtle purple tint along the gradient.

Watch how the edges of the grenadine ice cube turn white as they freeze and melt—it’s a charming little effect.
