With or without the sprinkles, this is my favorite vanilla sugar cookie recipe. The cookies develop a slightly crisp edge while staying soft and chewy inside, and they’re full of butter and vanilla flavor.

The combination of melted butter and cream cheese is the secret to a tender, chewy texture. The dough comes together in about 10 minutes, but chilling it for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 days) is essential to prevent spreading during baking.

I used both tiny nonpareils and red-and-green jimmies, but any festive sprinkle mix will work. Rolling the dough balls in extra sprinkles before baking is optional — it gives a brighter, more textured surface, but also adds a bit of crunch. I like to bake some plain and some rolled in sprinkles so there’s a choice for everyone.

For a playful holiday gathering, serve these cookies alongside other festive treats.

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl and set aside.
  2. In a stand mixer fitted with the whisk, beat the sugar, melted butter, vegetable oil, and softened cream cheese on high for 60 seconds.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, and vanilla and beat for another 30 seconds until combined.
  4. Switch to the paddle attachment and add the dry ingredients on low, mixing just until a moist dough forms. Fold in the sprinkles until evenly distributed.
  5. Cover and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll tablespoon-sized balls of dough and place them on the prepared sheets, spaced at least 3 inches apart. If desired, roll some dough balls in extra sprinkles.
  8. Bake for 10 minutes, removing the cookies when the edges are slightly golden and the centers still look a touch underdone.
  9. Cool on a wire rack. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 6 weeks.
